The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office has a warning for parents who are planning parties for their high school aged children. The sheriff’s office said they have received multiple reports of parties planned for teens in the parish. Parents were urged by the sheriff to not serve alcohol to minors. The sheriff says it is the parents responsibility to ensure alcohol is not served to underage children. “To be clear, it is our hope to send this vital message to anyone who plans to host underage parties. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office will enforce all applicable laws. Parents can be held responsible and may face criminal charges by hosting a party where alcohol is available to guests younger than the age of 21,” the sheriff’s office said in an issued statement. The sheriff reiterated that underage drinking is not only illegal, but dangerous. Parents were also warned of the impacts social media has had on parties. “Additionally, with social media shares quickly drawing unexpected or uninvited guests to parties, the threat of an unlikely incident occurring is enhanced. Social media is also fertile ground for parties where underage drinking gets kids and their parents in trouble,” the sheriff’s statement said. The sheriff warned parents that the office would not tolerate adults serving children alcohol.
